Province of British Columbia: Medical Service Plan (MSP)

Effective September 1, 2019, international students with a valid study permit who are studying in British Columbia for at least six months of the year are required to pay a health fee to access B.C.’s health-care coverage. This mandatory coverage ensures that all students are enrolled and can benefit from essential medical services, including those provided by physicians and midwives. The coverage may also include additional supplementary health care benefits.

If you are new to Canada, it is important to apply for the Medical Services Plan (MSP) as soon as you arrive. Coverage typically begins three months after your arrival in British Columbia, so it is recommended that you obtain private health insurance during this waiting period.

For more information on how to apply for MSP, details on monthly premiums, and the specific benefits covered, please visit the Province of British Columbia’s official website.

Insurance Coverage: While MSP provides students with basic health benefits, international students are encouraged to also acquire private insurance before their MSP goes into effect and potentially for the entire duration of their time studying in Canada.
